Star Fleet Project + Beyond 40th Anniversary

Worthwhile side project from Queen guitarist with Eddie Van Halen
Recorded in 1983 while Queen was on hiatus, Brian May's "StarFleet" mini-album was originally his attempt to blow off some steam and bring to fruition his idea for a rock version of the theme song for a popular sci fi animated show that he enjoyed. So he rang up Eddie Van Halen and a few other pals in the music biz and not only got the "Star Fleet" song, but two others: May's yet to be recorded composition "Let Me Out" (feat. May on lead vocals) and the instrumental jam "Bluesbreaker" which is dedicated to Eric Clapton. Not that the other songs aren't worth listening to also, but the title track has always been the main draw here. It's a great, catchy, up-tempo rock song that I enjoyed then and still do now. Brian May's trademark guitar sound and playing dominates, but Eddie Van Halen is turned loose for the solo and also delivers (of course). "Let Me Out" is a more laid back blues-based track and not as strong as the title track, but still more than worthwhile. "Bluesbreaker" is a bit overly long at nearly 13min and a mere excuse to give May and Eddie VH an opportunity to trade licks but is still also worthwhile, especially for guitar aficionados. To date, these three tracks have never been released on one cd. You either got the original released on EP or cassette, or to get it on CD, you had to get multiple CD singles that Brian May released with these recordings as a bonus track. This release puts all three songs (plus the single edit of the title track) on one cd, plus other bonus tracks (a couple of interviews from 1983-84 and some live tracks from Brian's 1993 tour). There is a more extensive set available covering these same sessions but it seems like a bit of overkill to me. Instead, this reasonably priced single CD gets the essentials and sounds great! A definite must for any Brian May or Eddie Van Halen fan, or anyone who just likes good music and great guitar playing.Another thing to take note of here is that these tracks are REMIXED and yes, the difference is notable. The biggest difference is that the drums on this new release sound far superior to the original mixes. Gone is is the overuse of effects that were applied to the original tracks that gave the drums (especially the snare drum) an overly harsh and processed sound. Brian May stated that the new released mixes sound closer to what the musicians heard the day these songs were recorded and I agree. I was initially disappointed that the original mixes weren't included, but these new mixes are definitely superior, so I'm retiring my old copy. For some reason they've altered the running order and put a new single mix of the title track to kick off the CD, but the original full length version (also remixed) is also included, so it's all here and sounds better than ever.

Good, not Great
I had this as a 3 song EP when it was originally released and really liked it. The long version of Star Fleet was a fun song and good jam featuring two very good guitar players with very different styles. This release could have been much better. Maybe there are some who will appreciate the interviews, but, for me, i'm here for the music. For that reason I deducted a star.

So fun hearing Eddie and Brian trade riffs!
Great hearing this project again after so many years. Bought the vinyl when it first came out in the 80's. This is a great sounding/nicely put together 40th Anniversary CD package. The CD booklet has some cool pictures and fun interviews.

A Remaster of an old EP
My Sis has the vinyl EP from way back. It's an interesting project with Queen's Brian May, Eddie Van Halen & Alan from Reo Speedwagon, among others helping out. The title track is probably best + an extended version with more guitar jams. Bonus stuff added from solo Brian May shows. The name of project seems to be influenced by a lame Star / Space exploration program. Which I forget typing this but, you can search for it.
