Before You Buy - Is It Hardwater Build-up or Etching
After top reviews in a leading consumer magazine, I decided to give the product a try. It is advertises as a "2-in-1 dishwasher cleaner and hard water spot remover" promising to leave both my dishwasher, dishes and glassware spot free. I mainly purchased it to remove the cloudy build-up on my drinking glasses and baking dishes (Pyrex and Anchor brands). The stainless steel inside of my dishwasher was left sparkling clean, but not my glassware. Also, I did not like the chemical smell residue left in my drinking glasses. The product removed some of the cloudy residue on the glassware, but what I did not realize was that much of the cloudiness was due to mineral etching and is permanent. The manufacturer of Glisten clearly states on the lable that it "will not remove etching from glassware". Glisten removes cloudiness caused by hardwater build-up only.I have since learned that what I should have done, prior to purchasing this product, was to do a test on a clouded glass. Soak the glass in vinegar for 5 minutes. If the cloudy deposits are removed, then hard water is your problem and try this product. However if the vinegar soak does not help - the glass is etched and permanently damaged...time to buy new glassware.Ironically, my glassware was etched by softened water in my home. I had purchased a water softener to address the hard water problem in our area, but the softener was not properly calibrated and the household water was too soft and damaged my glassware over time. I had been blaming the hard water, now I know better.

LOVE this stuff!!
I live in bush Alaska and also have well water. Our water is literally orange in the winter. It smells like blood and tastes like metal. Good ol' iron. Well, our dishwasher in our rental had never been cleaned before and it was literally 'Burnt Sienna' orange. It was nasty...we wanted to buy a whole new one. I bought this on a whim not really expecting it to work on hard, Alaska well water. I mean, our town is pretty rough and tumble as far as water goes. Half the town is not even plumbed for piped water!Anyway, with ONE run, the dishwasher lookes NEW inside. I was stunned. My boyfriend was stunned. My cat was like "Me-ow" and than continued licking itself. Thats...wow.One thing though- I tried this to scrub out rust/iron stains that have accumulated in our sink and tub...no results. Its still orange, still ghetto looking. I even read somewhere that we could run this through our Jacuzzi tub...didnt work. It looks a little cleaner...but no dice. Maybe I did it wrong (Ran 1 packet in warm water through Jacuzzi jets for 25 mins and rinsed with cold water for another 10), but I was kind of bummed that the magic of the dishwasher did not appear in the bathtub. Oh well. For dishwashers, though...MAGIC. And I'm ok with that :)

It Really Works!
I am so happy I Googled "white dishwasher residue" and stumbled onto this product. My dishwasher has been making me crazy with the white residue that was covering every bit of plastic in our kitchen. With a 2 year old, I was pretty sure whatever it was (I figured detergent residue) was toxic. I've complained to my husband about changing brands of dishwasher soap, rinse agent, etc. Turns out, we just needed to clean our dishwasher! Who knew? It's only 4 years old, and we've never had this issue with prior dishwashers. I was so excited to try this product, and it did not disappoint. I put the powder in the dispenser, and threw the black plastic spatulas that had turned gray from the white film. After the cycle was done, the spatulas were black again, and the inside of the dishwasher (which is stainless steel) was sparkling. We ran batch of dishes after the first cleaning cycle, and they came out cleaner than they have been in years. I decided to run a second clean cycle because there was just a smidge of white chalk left on the heating element and some spotting on the door. This is definitely the answer to dishwasher chalk, and it's affordable to boot!

Unsure..
I am unsure if this product works or not; but I have used it and it makes me 'feel better' about my machine. I live in an area that consistently fails their water testing. We have had: algae, bacteria, and iron bacteria in our water. As such, the iron bacteria sticks to your pipes and I am hoping this is cleaning the machine! I have used it in the tub of my front loader laundry washer also. You can SEE the water in that and this seems to actually clean that just fine. Very hard, nasty, dirty water; I purchased a water cooler for my home because of it; water has sediment in it. So this seems to work just fine; like I stated, can't tell in the dishwasher! Would buy it again just for piece of mind! Have to buy special dishwasher soap with phosphate in it to get the dishes clean...

At last! A dishwasher cleaner that actually WORKS! Yea!
My dishwasher was gross with lots of food deposits. One treatment (about $5) with Glisten got it 95% clean! I'll do it again in a month. Only negative involves a film it left on subsequently cleaned plastic products (bowl for coffee & filter from drip coffeemaker, tall plastic glass, etc). The smell is not bad. I highly recommend this magical product! With changes to eco-friendly dishwasher detergents that don't flush out dirt as well as the old, "bad" detergents did, it's wonderful to have product that actually works well - and doesn't stink for weeks after the clean (another brand, of course).

Not like I remember
I have not been able to find this stuff in the store for YEARS!! I LOVED using this in the past as we had hard water. When I found it online, I HAD to get some more to get the marks off our drinking glasses. After 1 use, our glasses did not look different. So I ran it again. After 2 uses, they still didn't look different. I was very disappointed that it didn't clear the marks off our drinking glasses. In the past it was like magic, and our drinking glasses would come out looking brand new and sparkly. Not this time. Very disappointed....
