The Fisher King

Classic Gilliam with great acting.
An absolutely classic take on the drama/comedy genre from master filmmaker Terry Gilliam. With Robin gone it's even more pertinent and sad in places, but in the end it's a Hollywood love story of sorts. It takes you from the highest highs to the lowest lows and back again, all put together with those odd angles and spectacular acting that Gilliam gets out of his actors in the best of his films. There isn't too much that hasn't been said about this one, but it is an underrated classic from the 90s that everyone should see. It has good values matched with clever filmmaking and a solid script. Bridges and Williams carry the show, but everyone does a fine job here. This is an intimate and heartwarming film with a great sense of style. The bluray here actually has none of the extra features on the Criterion, but it does have a better bitrate while being much cheaper. And the scene of course on the front of the cover is a classic from the film that seems more haunting than ever with Robin playing someone torn apart by demons he can't seem to fight. But hey, this is worth experiencing, so pick it up and have a good night with some fine Hollywood celluloid.

Delves into madness and romance in an incredible story
The Fisher King is a Terry Gilliam film. It starts off as a seemingly normal drama and then becomes more and more surreal as is Gilliam’s style. The movie features Jeff Bridges as Jack Lucas a New York City radio talk show host who is unhappy with his life. He gets a taste of unreality when he meets Parry (Robin Williams) a homeless man who is convinced he’s a knight that has to find the Holy Grail. That’s where the title of the movie comes from as the Fisher King was part of Arthurian legend as the man tasked with protecting the Grail. It turns out the two are intimately involved. Lucas caused a tragedy and Parry was one of the victims. Lucas feels deeply guilty and decides if they work together perhaps they can both get over their problems. The more time Jack spends with Parry the more he delves into his psyche. For instance, he’s in love with a woman named Lydia (Amanda Plummer) that he sees every day. One day he wait for her at Grand Central Station and when he finally sees her he envisions everyone at the station ballroom dancing. That shows the transition from fantasy at first to romance as Jack tries to help Parry with Lydia. In turn that helps Jack with his own relationship. You would never know the story was going to move in that direction from the start. Unfortunately Parry is still mentally ill so he has all kinds of evil visions that seek to destroy the happiness he’s trying to find.Overall Fisher King is a really surprising movie because it deals with both madness and love. It’s a real gem.

Don't Pass This One By.
An excellent film that was overlooked in its time. I would say that this is one of Robin Williams' finest performances. There is a lot going on in this movie and should be watched several times, at least. Great cameo by Tom Waitts too. Great acting overall, and great cinematography. This is a serious, dramatic film, with humor mixed in. This is a movie that should make you think and feel, and a must have in any film buffs collection.

Redemption, Atonement, Demons and Love
Quirky movie, but very realistic portrayal of mental illness produced by personal trauma. The juxtaposition and interplay between Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams is poignant and unexpected, if not surprising. But if not for the lack of negative response to obvious stalking, the movie holds together. William's love for his beloved is as delightful as is his demons are unexpected given their source. And in the end: boy gets girl and girl gets boy is predictable, but acceptable.

Maybe Robin Williams best performance ever...
For decades, I had passed on this movie. I always liked Jeff Bridges acting, but was not a huge fan of Robin Williams. Well, I made a HUGE mistake... This is a magical film that is hard to describe, but I think it is one of the best things that Robin Williams ever put his heart and soul into. I won't go into the plot or spoilers, cause this is a film that is best watched for the first time not knowing much. Just a great movie that will make you laugh loud and also get teary eyed at what happens to the two main characters. Terry Gilliam was a fantastic director, and this is one of his best efforts.

A magical film
Just an all around great film. Full excellent characters, Terry's signature quirkiness with deep heartfelt moments. Excellent acting from everyone involved and a fun yet sad tale for a story. The Criterion Collection's Blu-Ray treatment of this film is astounding. This is my first purchase from them and they seem to really treat great films the way every great film should be treated. Excellent supplemental's and art work. The picture quality is the stand out point as it is amazing. You should like if you're a fan of Terry Gilliam's work, and it would be hard not to even if you had never seen any of his films before.

What a film!
I have to say I have never seen such a ........ dreadful film in my whole life! I sat through it as I could not believe it could carry on being so bad. What utter rubbish. Bad acting and dreadful content. It is all down to opinion I suppose so I hope someone at the charity shop does not feel the same as me!

Funny and poignant
A superb film that everybody should watch. As a fan of Robin Williams, Jeff Bridges and Terry Gilliam it astonished me that I hadn't seen this film before, but I'm very glad I rectified that. The unmistakeable Gilliam style is present, but subdued for much of the film - this is not necessarily a bad thing, as it is used to great effect on those occasions it's allowed to run rampant. This is a funny, touching, well acted and occasionally heartbreaking film with a great cast and script.

Quite eccentric
Robin Williams at what he does best. His personal tragedy is the basis of the film's plot, along with hallucinations of the Grail knights and Grail itself, hence the title. All turns out well as he finds true love again, after losing his first wife to tragic circumstances, in part due and incited by a frivolous DJ, who proceeds to redeem himself by helping Robin Williams attain to better health, and a new woman.
