Love It!
I've been buying WD external drives for over 20 years and love how they keep getting smaller. I've only ever had one fail when I plugged in the power cord and saw it spark. It was a freak thing. These drives last almost forever, which is why I keep buying them.

Piece of crap!! Buyer beware!!!!
If you are looking for a dependable and reliable backup do not buy this product. I have had it for roughly 9 months and it's not even half full and it's already crapping out. Trying desperately to get 30 years worth of family pictures off of it before it dies completely. Thanks for making such a lousy product to store my family history on Western Digital. I will never purchase another one of your products!!!!!!!!!!

Questionable WD software
Be aware that the clever SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) system used to make this drive compact and affordable, with fewer platters, results in erratic and generally slow data transfer speed. And then there is the issue of Western Digital Software.I assumed I needed to run the WD software (included on disk) to get the advertised encryption. A window opened which said "Connecting" and stayed open for a long time--two or three minutes, even though I have a fast internet connection. What was going on, I do not know. Finally I was given the "install" option. It asked if I would allow it to send usage data to WD. I said no. Another "Connecting" window opened. Finally I got tired of waiting and also somewhat concerned about the drive's activity, so I aborted the installation. But when I checked Task Manager, WD software was still listed as active, and the LED in the drive was still flashing. I ended the WD process, and then finally the LED stopped flashing. What was going on? I have no idea. I cannot believe that WD would be making money out of customer data so that it can reduce the price of its drives.

Unuseable Hard Drive.
The software you download for it from the company is defective. They checked it out and found the same problem. This was a complete waste of my time and effort.

Engineering Flaw?
Beware,In my decades of being an avid fan of Western Digital drives to repair computers and using them as external storage for system image files this drive was a great disappointment to replace a defective drive of the same type and value as its predecessor that lasted forever. In this specific case this drive was to be used to store images of an internal laptop system drive. They work very well for this purpose and I have used them like this since they became available to protect from hard drive failures. Acronis True Image 2020 was the application used to create the image file locally but when run, this drive would for some strange reason ‘dismount’ after the completion of the backup routine and fail before the image could be validated. Without engineering knowledge of the drive, it is impossible to understand why the drive would dismount from the laptop when a similar type drive operated without a fuss. Regardless of this fault, the drive does work. It will store files and they can be listed and accessed; it just won’t interface properly during the automation of the backup application. So, is it truly defective or just a design flaw? Another drive, again of the same type was used to replace this new drive and worked flawlessly. Because the packaging was damaged when unpacking the new drive the return or refund was an implied forfeit and hence the drive will need to find another acceptable use. Now you know, depending on your intended need to purchase this specific drive to be cautious and protect the packaging as you may very well find it a disappointment.RegardsBTW, my customer bought this specific drive under my advice to restore the laptop backup operations after the failure of the original drive. When the new drive failed to work I ended up swapping the drive out myself to restore the backup operations and now I own the drive that dismounts. WD should take note, that stings.
