Good resource for Wood turning
I have a lathe on order and this is one of two books I purchased to get a background on what to look forward to.This is a nice hardcover book with many color pictures and high quality illustrations. The book starts out with equipment, shaping tools and other tools then transitions into techniques, by walking you through several projects. The techniques are separated into Spindle work, Turning end grain and face work and a final section on sanding and finishing. This is a beautiful book and you can tell a lot of effort was put into the layout and information in it.I will be referring back to it often.

A great shop reference
I inherited an ancient Craftsman 12x42 wood lathe. I had no idea what to do with it. I turned a few pieces of firewood on it, made them into smaller rounder pieces of firewood, but really had no clue what I was doing. When a slab of oak lept out of the lathe and cracked a fender on my motorcycle, I put the thing away and quit playing for a long time.Enter my wife. She wanted me to carve an Irish wedding goblet for some friends who are getting married. I poked around for a while and finally settled on this book. It doesn't have a how-to for an Irish wedding goblet, but it does have other important things such as proper tool set up, sharpening chisels, and how to turn regular goblets. So I have a nice stick of maple now, trued and spinning smoothly because of this book, and it is well on its way to being a wedding gift. He gave me confidence again, by telling me that wood will leap out of everyone's lathe at some point. The only reason I gave this book four out of five, is that in some parts the author assumes I know what the hell he is talking about. He tosses about a lot of jargon that I haven't learned yet. But other than that, I would say this is a must have for any shop with a lathe.

Tough to Review
This book is tough to review fairly. I would say that overall it is an excellent book for a beginner and a experienced turner. I think it should be owned by every lathe owner. Everyone will learn something from this book if not quite a bit. But thats the problem. Maybe only 10 pages of the book really apply to your normal lathe work. But reading about the other types of projects may help too. It really just should be near any lathe for reference and maybe a trick.

One of Richard Raffans best books!
Richard Raffan's book is one of the finest out there for anyone learning woodturning. He is very detailed and describes his techniques very well with lots of excellent photos to help illustrate. It is the kind of reference that a turner will go back to over and over as is covers woodturning from A to Z on tools, techniques with projects as well. Richard was a production turner and a master woodturner who truly understands his craft and can explain it.

Timely advice with great photos
Richard shares with us readers techniques that will always aid us in learning how best to master woodturning, allowing us to see each problem we encounter as discovery and not something to become frustrated with. This book isn't far from my lathe, and always provides me with insight on how to get the most from wood turning.

Educational.
Educational for a beginner like myself . Turning is overwhelming to the completely ignorant such as I. I am fortunate to have met an 87 year old man who is an engineering genius who desires to impart some of his knowledge to me. This book will allow me to show enough of a sign of intelligence so that he doesn't write me off as completely hopeless.
